On-the-Job Incidents

Although we're not an OSHA job site, we will be tracking our on-the-job incidents to maintain our safety record. We're hoping that we won't need to add much to this list! So far, the family member who has contributed most to our tarnished safety record is, drum roll please... Nicki!

1. A really shiny coat

Although this incident happened at one of Bill's job sites rather than at our house, it's a warning for the future! Nicki has a habit of inspecting Bill's work for quality by sticking her nose or ears in newly applied varnish. Every so often, she comes home with a really shiny coat!

In case anyone's keeping score, varnish does not come off dog fur. You have to wait for it to grow out. And with Nicki's quality campaign, she might be waiting for a lot of spots to grow out.

We're so proud!

2. Why am I in trouble? YOU threw the ball.

Okay, so it wasn't all her fault. In the process of clearing out the backyard to begin the construction of the garage, we laid out some old paint in shallow plastic to dry it out before sending it to landfill. Nicki loves to chase balls, and one afternoon, Annette (accidentally) threw it into the paint, and Nicki ran so fast that she reached the wet, gloppy paint before Annette could call her back. -sigh- Nicki went from happily chasing the ball to getting a very cool bath outside in December. She forgave us for the bath, though -- that's the great thing about dogs, so very forgiving.

3. Continuing her quality campaign

Nicki can always be counted on to stick her nose in whatever's happening, and this helps her in her semi-official role of quality control with painted surfaces.

4. Gus inspects the dryer hose

See how Gus is trying to look non-chalant about the dryer hose that he has unravelled from under the house? Nice try, bad doggy.

So, who's Gus, you ask? He lives next door (along with Sugar) and all three dogs play together with an open fence policy. One day, Gus discovered that he could stick his paw into the dryer vent just far enough to snag the metal vent hose. And, you have a great game for yourself if you pull and pull. That is, if you're a dog and not a homeowner. :-|
